I recently read an interview of Rihanna where she stated that she was made fun of by her peeers during her years in school because she wasn't "Black enough".
This raise the question, why is it that certain cultures/ethnicity groups discriminate against their own kind because they believe they aren't what the "typical" person of that race is?
In the black culture if you don't talk a certain way, dress a certain why, they believe you hate your own race and want to be white. Which is not the case. I strongly believe especially in the black community we need to stop discriminating against each other and stick together. If there is any hatred or racism it's definitely comes from within our own group more than from the outside.
So do tell, what are your thoughts on this subject? And have you had any experiences of this?

I never understood this thought process either. It almost is like promoting sterotypes and prejudices. One of my best friends in high school was black and she wasn't always treated fairly by some of the other black kids. It wasn't constant, but they would sometimes tease her and say she was an oreo because she hug out with some white kids. Luckily, this small group of kids who teased did not represent the entire black population at our school, so we usually just let it roll and stuck to hanging out with the non-ignorant types.
1you're so right, lorelei about promoting stereotypes and prejudice.
I can't even count how many times i've been called an Oreo, and when i think about it i've been made fun of from not only from my peers but also family members.
My sister always says i talk "white" and when i ask her why she continues to bring that up she tells me, "oh it's not a bad thing, you'll get a job talking like that." What does that mean?
It's really is annoying and i just don't understand the point of it. Why should we all have to be the same? So what if i don't listen to rap all the time, or dress in roca wear i still appreciate my culture and proud of who i am.
And for some reason i try to hang out with a lot of black people but they just can't except how "different" i am compare to them but if they took the time they could accept me. So i just hang out with people from other cultures who i don't have to change who i am to be accepted.
2The whole race thing is so tired! All the ignorant people who keep things going like the ones at your school Lore, make me so sick., we all bleed red.
3I could go on for days in reference to this subject. I will try to limit my dogma/rant.
I feel like people are comfortable placing others in boxes because then it means that they can have a predisposition regarding every single person they meet. I myself live in a suburb of San Francisco and was raised on a military base. I didnt have any african american friends for as long as i could remember. When I moved off base and was placed in more diverse situations, I made friends that were of the same racial decent as me and it was all good. Peoples likes and dislikes are not based off of ethnic makeup. you like who and what you like and its based off of your background and personal tastes.
I also get this A LOT because I am married to a white man. There were people at my last job that actually didnt like me because my husband was white =o[!! Whats that about. Someone mentioned me marrying up once there. I was like hello, my family makes WAY more money than my inlaws and I still to this day, make more than my spouse. I had to just let that situation go and pray on it. How ignorant. Someone was like "Does he treat you better?" im like we have the same problems as EVERYONE else does.
While I have said all that I have said and have OBVIOUS problems with the notion that someone cannot be black enough, especially in a world that seems to not want to let you forget, I do have a problem with any person that is not proud of their ethnic makeup. Self hatred is disgusting and there is nothing worse then someone who is ashamed of the color of their skin or their hair. I agree that it how black you are cannot be measured in likes, clothes, music tastes, but I do believe it can be measured in how proud you are of your ethnic makeup.
I'll stop the rant now....
have a good evening ladies !!

4omg. i will be commenting for hours.
5I agree with everyone. We all bleed red and Lorelei raised some very good points. It is like promoting stereotypes. I pray that when I have a child it won't have to deal with such ignorance.
